FAQ

  • Why should we hire you versus a salaried employee?

Contracting with Sustainable Grant Solutions instead of hiring a salaried in-house employee is fiscally smart for the following reasons:

You have a grant writing and consulting expert ready to go immediately.
No costs for training or managing an employee.
No costs for benefits, holidays, sick time, etc.
No costs for an office, computer, etc.
I focus exclusively on the scope of work.
I accomplish a defined set of deliverables.
You can plan for the defined scope of work in your budget.

  • What's your success rate?

Relying solely on success rate is an inadequate measure of a grant writer's effectiveness. While a well-researched, well-written grant application by a professional will certainly make the difference in your organization’s likelihood of being funded, the outcome of a grant application is not guaranteed, and often hinges on factors beyond a writer's control, such as the competitiveness of funding and the organization's relationship with the funder.

That being said, I have proudly secured millions of dollars in financing for client organizations, utilizing my skills to develop long-term strategies for securing sustainable grant funding, a dedication to staying on top of grant deadlines, and a capacity to focus on your organization’s grant funding needs, so you don't have to.

  • Do you charge by the hour?

I use a project-based or retainer billing model rather than charging by the hour. This approach is mutually beneficial , in that, it provides both myself and my clients with predictability and facilitates better budget planning.

  • Do you require any payment before you start work?

I require 50% payment in advance for every service excluding the Grant Consulting service. For the Grant Consulting service, the first month’s payment is required before work begins. The remaining months’ payments are due on an agreed monthly schedule.

  • Why is Grant Readiness the first step before any other service is provided?

I have found that this process is the most effective way to guarantee grant writing success for my clients. Prior to embarking on the journey of pursing grant funding, it's crucial to ensure that the organization has all the necessary documentation and information that is often required for a grant application. The objective of this service is to compile the necessary information, ensuring your organization is well-prepared and grant-ready.

  • What are benefits of the grant writing process for a non-profit or other entity?

Successful grant writing not only has the potential to secure significant funding, reaching into the thousands or even millions of dollars for your organization, but it also yields additional valuable benefits, including:

Clarity in programming and operations: Through the grant writing process, organizations are compelled to articulate their programs and operations. This not only enhances the quality of the grant proposals but also fosters a deeper understanding of the organization's objectives internally.

Mission fulfillment and increased impact: Successful grant awards directly contribute to the fulfillment of the organization's mission, enabling the organization to expand its reach and enhance your ability to serve.

Stakeholder partnerships: Grant writing often involves building connections and partnerships with stakeholders. Securing funding from grants can strengthen relationships with funders, creating opportunities for ongoing collaboration and support.

Brand enhancement, credibility, and trust: Successful grant awards elevate an organization's profile, boosting its brand recognition, credibility, and trustworthiness in the eyes of donors, partners, and the community at large. This enhanced reputation can attract more opportunities for support and collaboration.

  • Why should we hire you instead of trying to keep writing grants ourselves?

Hiring me as your grant writer has several advantages over attempting to manage the process yourself:

No more distractions from your actual job responsibilities: You can focus on the crucial aspects of your role such as formulating the vision, building the team, or managing budgets.

No more working on weekends, weeknights, and holidays to find time to write grants: You can establish better work-life balance and spend more time on your mental and physical health needs and with your family and friends.

Materialization of the dreams you have for your organization: I specialize in crafting compelling narratives that resonate with funders, increasing the likelihood of turning your aspirations into tangible results.

  • Is there a minimum grant award amount for which you will write a grant?

Yes, I write grant applications that are requesting greater than $10,000 from a funder. I have found that writing for requests less than that are not economically beneficial for my clients.

  • Our grant wasn't funded, now what?

Success in this business isn’t always immediate, or consistent, although we’d like it to be. However, the process is always beneficial to your organization in some way. Funders choose to fund organizations for any number of reasons; a well-researched, well-written grant application is one piece of the puzzle.

We can request feedback from the funder to see why the grant was not awarded and learn for future applications.

We can use any newly formulated text, data, and reference material from the grant in the master template for other grant applications, which will make future applications more efficient.

The narrative and budget of the grant can be used to show the need for the project or program for fundraisers, sponsorship forms, crowdfunding campaigns, etc.

The grant language can be used in excerpts, infographics, and statistics on the organization’s website, social media, and other promotion material.
